Athens derived its name from the goddess Athena, who, according to Greek mythology, created the olive tree and gave it to Athens, enabling it to become a city of great wealth. The olive leaves depicted on Athena's helmet commemorate the victory over the Persians at Marathon and at Salamis. The owl symbolized wisdom which was Athena's realm.
Athens was one of the first Greek city-states to produce silver coins that facilitated trade throughout the known world. The “Old Style” Tetradrachm retained its basic design for two centuries, and its high value meant that it was hoarded as a store of wealth, as well as circulated, which is why many of these hoarded coins survive today in excellent condition.
