In Celtic religion, Epona was the goddess of horses and ponies. She was also a fertility and mother goddess. She and her horses escorted souls in the afterlife. The name Epona ('Great Mare') originates from Gaulish, an extinct Celtic language that became the Celtic word: epos ('horse').
Epona, the Celtic horse goddess, was venerated in the Danubian provinces during the Roman era, (sometimes seen as a counterpart to a Thracian horseman) frequently surrounded by, or feeding, horses, symbolizing her role as a protective mother goddess of horse-breeding, fertility, and abundance. Some interpretations suggest she served as a "receiver of the dead" in the Danubian mysteries.
