Sikyon became a democracy in the 3rd century BC and was celebrated for its contributions to ancient Greek art, producing many famous painters and sculptors.
The Chimera on the obverse represents a common motif in Corinthian vase painting. Homer's brief description in the Iliad is the earliest surviving literary reference: "a thing of immortal make, not human, lion-fronted and snake behind, a goat in the middle, and snorting out the breath of the terrible flame of bright fire." The "dove" on the reverse die is probably the rock pigeon, great numbers of which still inhabit the cliffs that surround the ancient site. The were perhaps sacred to Apollo or Aphrodite, whose temple was one of the principal edifices of Sikyon.
