This Sterling Silver replica was cast from a mold of an original Ancient Celtic Stater minted in the 1st C. BC by the Coriosolites tribe who lived in Northwestern Gaul on the coast of present-day Brittany, France. The present day city of Corseul, Brittany is named after the Gallic tribe.
The front of this pendant shows the reverse side of the original coin which is a stylized charioteer driving a biga (two horse chariot) with a boar under the horse. The back of the pendant shows the obverse of the coin which is a stylized head (possibly of Apollo) with large spiral hair curls.
Philip II of Macedon (the father of Alexander the Great) would hire Celtic mercenaries to aid in his military campaigns, and often paid these warriors with gold staters that had laureate head of Apollo on the obverse, and a charioteer driving a biga on the reverse. This style of coinage spread throughout the Celtic world as an acceptable means of commerce.
The curvilinear motif popularized by the Celtic La Tene Culture that is evident on this replica coin directly influenced both the Art Nouveau movement and Cubism popularized by Picasso and Miro.
