One of the most striking peculiarities of Sicilian coins is the frequency with which personifications of Rivers and Nymphs occur. Arethusa was a nymph, possibly the daughter of an Arcadian river god, and a follower of the virgin goddess Artemis. This figure is frequently called either Arethusa or Artemis on the issues from Syracuse. The octopus motif has been an important symbol of Sicily and Syracuse from antiquity up to the present.
