Additional Information: The great victory of the Greeks over the Carthaginians at Himera in B.C. 480 was the prelude to a long interval of peace and prosperity all over Sicily. The coins of this epoch, which are plentiful throughout the island, are of great variety and interest. In style they exhibit a continuous advance upon the methods of archaic art, and a transition to the highest point of excellence ever reached in the art of die-engraving.
One of the most striking peculiarities of Sicilian coins is the frequency with which personifications of Rivers and Nymphs occur. Arethusa was a nymph, possibly the daughter of an Arcadian river god, and a follower of the virgin goddess Artemis. This figure is frequently called either Arethusa or Artemis on the issues from Syracuse. The octopus motif has been an important symbol of Sicily and Syracuse from antiquity up to the present.
The octopus litra is relatively scarce, and, due to the thinness of the flan, difficult to find in very good condition
